About The Project

The Internet is changing the way we work, socialize, create, and share information, and organize the flow of people, ideas, and things around the globe. Yet the magnitude of this transformation is still underappreciated. The Internet has accounted for 21 percent of the GDP growth in mature economies over the past 5 years. And yet, in SA, we are still in the early stages of appreciating the transformations the Internet will unleash and the opportunities it will foster. The real beneficiaries of the Internet’s growth are people. In order to access Internet effectively, citizens need to be upskilled in Digital Literacy. Digital literacy has become a worldwide concern for future economic growth.

The I-CAN Centre (Genesis Community IT Initiative) has developed an initiative “I-CAN Google Day” to promote an awareness of Google Apps and Free Google Certifications to improve citizens’ level of digital skills. Each Friday, the I-CAN Team empowers citizens from various communities to understand the importance and impact of a digital world. The course incorporates both theoretical understanding of the cloud and the creation and utilization of a Google account.

The project is targeted towards citizens (High School Students / Unemployed Youth / Elderly) who wish to learn more about the internet. The aim of the I-CAN Team is narrow the digital divide through facilitation on the Google platform.
